This two-volume publication presents the final results of the rescue excavations conducted in the G trenches at Buto – Tell el-Faraʿîn during the 2001 and 2002 field campaigns.

Volume 1 focuses on the pottery from trenches G01 to G04 excavated in 2001. These mainly yielded pottery dating to the Saite and Persian Periods, coming from various contexts connected with large-scale storage activities, that were subsequently disturbed in the early Ptolemaic Period. The whole area was covered by secondary, sherd-rich deposits of late Ptolemaic and early Roman date.

Volume 2 covers the ceramic assemblage and the human remains from an early Roman necropolis uncovered in trenches G05 to G08 in 2002. While some of the pottery was directly associated with the burials, the majority comes from secondary deposits post-dating the interments. The volume also includes a comprehensive catalogue of the burials’ archaeological and anthropological data, accompanied by a discussion of the results.

The main plan of the burials in trenches G05 to G08 (Vol. 2, Fig. 117) is provided separately as digital supplement in the scale of 1:50.
